About the etching process
Etching involves scratching an image on the surface of a zinc or copper plate. These “scratches“ are filled with (coloured) ink and put through an etching press (in appearance like an old fashioned wringer) that squeezes the ink out onto damp paper. With re-inking multiples can be made (look for the number in the bottom left hand corner under the image).
The marks on the plate are made in any number of ways including using a sharp tool to physically scratch the surface. In the case of most of the etchings reproduced in this series, a protective layer of bitumen was spread over the plate. The drawing was scratched through the bitumen exposing the plate, which was then dipped in a bath of nitric acid - thus etching the surface. Areas of tone were created in the traditional way by aquatinting the plate (sprinkling a fine powder over the surface, alternatively protecting and etching until there are smooth and rough areas) as well as at the printing stage by the use of wiping techniques including the use of plate tone and “dolly” wiping. The use of coloured ink and multiple plates are a characteristic of Christine’s work.
The range consists of 10 designs; printed on high quality, smooth, cream stock. 123mm square, with co-ordinating metallic coloured envelopes.
